Highlights of the Experience
Luke Pen Walk Trail
Challenge yourself with this 7km one way hike on the Luke Pen Walk Trail, a beautiful meandering walk trail, closely following the Kalgan River. The walk provides constantly changing views of the river, along with a mixture of vineyards, green pastures with grazing cattle and eucalypt bushland. Keep an eye out for the local Noongar Aboriginal fish trap relics, wildlife including bandicoots and the many species of birds.
Bushtucker Inspired Morning Tea
Enjoy a bushtucker themed morning tea which includes a variety of cakes, biscuits and bliss balls that have been infused with Bushtucker herbs and spices. It also includes a bushtucker infused tea.
Kalgan Riverbank Gourmet Picnic Lunch
Sit back and relax and give your legs a stretch whilst devouring a gourmet picnic hamper packed full of local goodness for everyone to share including fresh bread, crackers, dips, olives, chutneys, relish, pickled & grilled vegetables, meats, terrine, cheese & crudites, and washing it down with a selection of freshly squeezed juices.
Kalgan River Paddle
Enjoy a leisurely 7km kayaking experience exploring the ancient Kalgan River looking for hidden treasures and listening to stories of culture and history. The paddle provides the opportunity to see the abundant wildlife that inhabits the river environment including pelicans, ducks and osprey. Take a step back in time on the Kalgan River as we share stories about one of the states earliest-settled rural districts. Whilst there is not a lot of visual evidence of the past, tall tales ignite your imagination of bridges colliding in the 1939 floods, the first farming activity of the early settlers and the relic remains of the fish traps, artefacts proving that man was inhabiting the Kalgan at least 19,000 years ago.

Exploring the outdoors does pose certain hazards even if participants do not recklessly place themselves in harm's way. Risks such as falling, slipping on loose gravel, sprains and insect/snakes bites are possible. Our guides are qualified and experienced, conducting our tours with those risks and others in mind, and whilst the risk will always remain, we do exercise a high level of caution throughout the experience with safety of our clients being our highest priority. Our guides are also fully qualified in Wilderness First Aid should the need arise.
We do highly recommend travel insurance for any tour experiences.
Whilst paddling experience is not a necessity as basic instruction is provided, some understanding at least will make your experience a more pleasurable one. A basic level of swimming ability (being able to doggy paddle 25m and or tredding water) is required to take part. We are never paddling through more than a river being 50m wide and all participants MUST wear the PFD (life jacket) provided.
Most of our experiences are suitable for those with a good level of fitness. We do encourage you to be fit and well enough to make the most of the experiences we have on offer. This particular experience includes paddling trails that are graded 2/3. It is a sheltered paddling experience suitable for all types of paddle craft and paddling abilities. The hiking component is a Grade 3 trail suitable for beginners. We do pause throughout to allow those who need to catch their breath. The quality of your experience is our priority.
Note, for the safety of all passengers, we reserve the right to prevent passengers from participating in some activities. Those with injuries should contact us directly before making a booking.
There are toilet facilities provided at the start only. All other business would need to be done in the 'bush toilet' so please have toilet paper/tissues and hand antiseptic with you just in case you cannot wait to reach the drop toilets.
Please note that unless a severe weather warning is forecast, this experience will go ahead. A little rain won't hurt anyone and we just ask that you dress accordingly.

I joined two tours - the Walpole Wilderness and Torndirrup eco tours. I booked a few days before the tour but made a mistake in the date ! I was very worried but Chelle was very helpful and immediately made the changes that eased my mind I was travelling. The eco tours were great experiences. I was very impressed with the tour arrangements (the sightseeing, the bush tucker ...) and Chelle's passion of the nature. It's the most beautiful and inspiring encounter with nature.
Went on an amazing adventure 4 x 4 off-roading as part of the She Seeks Adventure Social Series. Had a fabulous day learning new skills in a safe and encouraging environment. Stepped out of my comfort zone in beautiful setting surrounded by like minded women which made this an unforgettable experience.
Hi Chelle, I just wanted to write a quick msg to let you know how awesome it has been going on your group hikes. I have always wanted to do something in the outdoors which involved both weight loss and mental healing. I have slowly found something that has helped me establish who i am as a person as it has given me the clarity i been looking for, to find myself as a person. And I love myself for it! Thank you for creating such a great team environment for all fitness level, people that love to be one with nature, and for people that just need that time to find what they need. You rock!
In Dec 2019, I was lucky enough to be part of a Women’s Adventure Weekend with Chelle, it was one of the best experiences of my life, I went into the weekend to push myself out of my comfort zone and do something just for me. I would go again in a heartbeat, I came out of the weekend with a new found confidence, feeling refreshed, renewed and accomplished, plus the added bonus of making great new friends.
I attempted challenges I never thought I would and push through many emotional boundaries, I can’t thank Chelle and her team enough, the opportunities and support provided was perfect.
I urge everyone to give this a go, you may well surprise yourself!!!

Along with 2 of my dear friends, I did the Summer Sunset Yoga Hike at the Peak Head Trail in Torndirrup National Park, Albany. We are experienced hikers and found Chelle’s care, knowledge and obvious passion for the Aussie outdoors so impressive. The Nature Immersion was particularly delightful - after all that’s why we are there! Our hike was followed by a Yoga Session with Ainslie from Envisage Yoga & Wellness - if you haven’t practiced Yoga on a rock face with a view of the wonderful Albany coastline as the sun sets well.... book it in! Followed by the most delicious picnic of cake, biscuits and tea made from bush tucker.
Then home with such a sense of peacefulness and relaxation. Just beautiful.

We really loved our tour of Albany with Chelle. Despite the wet weather, Chelle managed to keep our children engaged, shared enlightening facts about plants and Albany’s history. She also took lovely photos and prepared tea with some bush herbs that were completely new to us. The sites were breath-taking but Chelle pieced everything so well together. I was tempted to cancel due to wet weather but was really glad we went ahead. Highly recommended when in Albany.

Fantastic hike, no pressure to rush. I absolutely loved the meditative forest immersion moment. Yummo handmade bushtucker morning tea was a real treat. The morning started off quite crisp and cool but brightened to a warm, clear day. Chelle, our guide is really knowledgeable but warm, approachable and has great people skills. When I can afford another hike, hopefully a night one, will definitely be choosing this lovely family run business.

Thanks Chelle at Down Under Discoveries, I had a really great time, learnt lots and didn't feel rushed or unsafe at any point! even with the snake trails. I couldn't do something like that on my own so it's great you've created something that gets people outside. Lovely group of people and I look forward to my next adventure!

I have joined Chelle on some amazing hikes around the Perth area. She is a fantastic guide with a depth of knowledge and a passion for the environment and for bringing it to people who might never get to enjoy the countryside. Albany Region, you are lucky to have her!!!
